Summer marches on as the glorious 12th approaches. There will be grouse on the menu once prices descend from traditionally stratospheric levels! We will be pairing the birds with mulberries from a secret location - Scottish girolles too, if we can track some down. I had the good fortune one August to be on a grouse moor in the Highlands when I was twelve and enjoyed wild mushrooms picked by knowledgeable French country gentlemen paired with venison liver for breakfast. Pretty grown up eating for a young lad!
This seasonal glow also makes me think of refreshing drinks to complement our menus. So when we met owner and distiller Sarah Thompson of nearby Blackdown Artisan Spirits earlier in the year, we hatched a collaborative summer event of inspired spirits from the distillery, matched with a three course menu plus cocktail and canapé reception. One not to miss!
Blackdown Artisan Spirits - 27 August
Blackdown Artisan Spirits are an innovative producer of finely crafted spirits striving for quality and refinement.
The company was established in 2013 by Sarah Thompson and her husband Nathan.
Nestled in the foothills of the Blackdown Hill in West Sussex, the distillery is surrounded by 40 acres of Silver Birch trees and these were the inspiration for the first ever Sussex dry gin.
Also included in the portfolio are a vodka, vermouth, a black cherry liqueur and an elderberry port.
Blackdown Artisan Spirits pride themselves on using only natural botanicals, the key ingredient being Silver Birch sap. This unique ingredient adds softness to the products, and serves to make the other botanical flavours sharper and more pronounced.
As well as focusing on quality, Blackdown Artisan Spirits are also proud to use only British suppliers for all their ingredients and packaging, ensuring that these products are truly British.
