The lengthy transfer from Catania via hydrofoil gve us the blissful sense of detachment that we had been seeking.  We stayed in the village of Malfa at Hotel Signum, an enchanting and stylish address discreetly tucked away from the tiny main street.  The service and the setting, with magnificent views from it's terraces across the restaurant with a superb wine list is highly regarded, we preferred the simpler pleasures of two family-run establishments in or close to the port of Santa Marina, easily accessed by local bus.

At Porto Bello in Santa Marina we enjoyed sensational marinated anchovies, great past dishes, beautiful red prawns, and platefuls of crisply fried squid.  At nearby Lingua in Restaurant Delfino, we gorged on fat juicy clams, sweet and delicious and delivered twice daily from neighbouring Lipari.  

We concluded this meal with the famous local sweet wine, Malvasia, by dunking baked almond biscotti into it and creating an irresistible harmony of flavours.  To give an idea of Island hospitablity, the owner insisted on driving us back to our hotel.  We do that sort of thing at Jeremy's - but only if you get stuck in the snow!

The trip seems like a distant dream now, of course, but we are in good spirits and looking forward to welcoming you during the autumn season.
